    December 2014: Music to My Ears

    Hearing loss can happen to anyone. Unfortunately, in the last decade, younger and younger people have been diagnosed with hearing loss. Everyday activities may be impacting the quality of your hearing without you even realizing it. Listening to loud music with earbuds or headsets, going to concerts, blow drying your hair, mowing the lawn, and loud machinery can cause hearing loss. Acquired hearing loss is any type of hearing loss that occurs after birth and can be caused by illness, injury, or loud noise.

    November 2014: It's a Stall World

    It's a stall world after all. Do you spend an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom stall? Overactive bladder (OAB) and other voiding disorders can keep you from doing the things your love because you constantly live in fear of being too far away from a restroom. Voiding disorders can affect your overall quality of life, lead to embarrassment, and force you to live in a "stall world."

    Have you been thinking of getting a tattoo? We are here to tell you Think Before you Ink. Just to be clear, we are not taking a stand against tattoos — it is important, however, to make sure that cleanliness and post-tattoo care are things that you think about before you ink. Don't be reckless and think that getting a tattoo is nothing — it is something that can have an effect on your health if you do not have it done in a clean setting, take care of it afterwards, etc.

    September 2014: Battle of the Blah-zzz

    Do you feel fatigued during times of the day when you used to have energy? Do you feel like you need that midday coffee in order to make it through the entire workday? Many people get tired around 3 pm everyday and jokingly say that they need caffeine to get themselves going. Why does that happen? More than likely you are not getting adequate sleep each night. Sleep is an integral, and arguably the most important, part of the Big Three—eating healthfully, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

    May 2014: No Bones About it

    Osteoporosis is a serious disease of the bones. Osteoporosis literally means "porous bone." If you looked at your bones under a microscope, you would see that they have tiny pores that look a bit like honeycomb. When a person has osteoporosis, those pores become much larger and make the bones brittle and weak. As a result, bones can break from a minor fall or, in more serious cases, even from simple actions such as sneezing or bumping furniture.

    April 2014: Going Viral 

    HPV, also known as the human papillomavirus, is the most common sexually transmitted infection. There are more than 40 types of HPV that infect both males and females. Some of these types can cause genital warts, while the more serious types of HPV can cause cancer. In the more serious types of HPV, normal cells become abnormal and begin to reproduce at a higher rate, which can lead to cancer.

    September 2013: Seeing Spots

    Spots … you find them on ladybugs, leopards and polka-dot dresses, and sometimes they even end up on the carpet. But spots do not belong on your skin.  Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are three major types of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma (these are the two most common forms) and melanoma (the less common but most dangerous form). Skin cancer occurs when there are mutations in the DNA of the skin cells. When these mutations happen they don’t discriminate; skin cancer affects men and women of all ages and races.

    Did you know type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90% of all diabetic cases worldwide?  Type 1 accounts for roughly 10%.  Both types are the results of metabolism disorder where the body has a difficult time producing or properly responding to insulin.  Without insulin, the body cannot convert sugar from food into nutrients for cells.  Undiagnosed or uncontrolled, diabetes can cause serious organ damage and a variety of other health complications.  The good news is: diabetes is a manageable disease, but you have to work with you doctor.
