The Definitive Observation Units (DOU) consisting of 86 beds, provide 24-hour care
of patients over the age of fourteen, who have actual or potential cardiac disease. DOU patients require continuous cardiac telemetry monitoring, yet their condition does not necessitate intensive care nursing. All open heart surgery patients are transferred from the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) to the DOU postoperatively. Physicians who are members of San Antonio Community Hospital’s Medical Staff order the services provided in these units.
