The
Team Approach
The Hospital utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care
that focuses on providing support on all levels. The goal is to encompass
the body, mind, and spirit in the healing of each person with cancer,
as well as providing support for the patient's loved ones. This team
of dedicated people recognizes the individuality of the patient and
their disease, and works diligently with the patient to provide the
best program of care. This approach allows the team the flexibility
to adjust to each patient's unique circumstances, while maintaining
regard for the patient's dignity and independence.
The Cancer Committee serves as the administrative and policy-making
body, which directs all the Cancer Program activities. This Committee
meets quarterly to ensure that the highest quality of cancer care is
provided. The Committee is involved in all aspects of the Cancer Program
including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, as well as professional
and public education programs. The Tumor Board is comprised of physicians
whose special expertise is cancer care. The members are available to
assist individual physicians develop a treatment plan for recommendation
to patients with unique diagnoses or circumstances.
A Cancer Registry is maintained to provide continuity of care for people
with cancer through a follow-up system which is updated annually. The
Cancer Registrar monitors patients due for yearly checkups, and notifies
their physicians accordingly, to encourage systematic follow-up. The
Registrar also maintains communication with patients who have relocated
or lost physician contact. The statistical portion of the data collected
is reported to the Regional Registry and the National Cancer Data Base.
None of the data submitted contains information that could identify
individual patients. The analysis of this data assists with funding
and support for new and improved cancer treatments. Patients have an
increased chance for early detection of new or recurrent tumors through
the Registry's lifetime follow-up service. You may contact our Cancer
Registrar at (909) 920-4992.
